Make a Small-Space Craft Center
July 5, 2012 // Comments OffCraft space is often hard to find, especially if you live in a small house or apartment with limited available space or open areas. Don’t let that stop you from creating projects that you have in mind or have seen and want to recreate. There’s something special about a place of your own in which to lose yourself for a little while and satisfy the creative side of your brain. You can put together an area used for just such projects without having to clear off the kitchen table just when you have the beads all laid out in your desired design pattern.
Find a corner you can claim for your very own art space. Here are some suggestions to help you with one of the best projects you may ever create.
- Look around the house and try to find one corner that could be used for your personal craft space. It doesn’t need to be large. It could be a spot that holds a floor lamp, or a space that has a collection of umbrellas, mops, brooms, and other assorted items. Find a new home for the broom by hanging it up somewhere else. Plan to put a different, more functional light over your new work space and sell or give away your floor lamp.
- Find furniture that will work with your plan. If you have an extra desk or narrow table that will fit into the space, you’re in business. The desk can double as a work bench and the drawers will hold the supplies. A narrow table can have shelves on the wall above it to hold supplies.
- When you don’t have the right furniture, make some. (Example: Use two small file cabinets, one at each side, and an old door stretched across them as a table. The file drawers will hold the craft supplies, while the door will act as the craft table.)
- Think floor-to-ceiling. Don’t hesitate to utilize the wall between the top of your work space and the ceiling. Put shelves up on the wall. Put hooks in strategic places from which to hang twine, scissors, or other tools. Old small drawers out of a discarded desk or tool bins can be set on the shelves and labeled with the contents. Baskets work well, too. Use what makes you happy.
- For storing tiny items that randomly tend to appear around your creative space, place small dishes, or unique pieces of pottery. Jewelry trays work well, too.
- Small spaces become cluttered and disorganized quickly, so be sure to plan a specific place for each item or items you need for your projects. All of your stamps should be in one shallow drawer arranged for easy selection. Beads can be stored in trays organized as needed and ready when you need them. If everything has a specific place your craft space will be available when you feel like making something and you’ll know where all of your tools are located, too.
- Keep your space clean by putting everything back when you’re finished with it. Most of us can think of at least one project that has been delayed or even abandoned due to the frustration of having to find a clear area in which to work, or due to the inability to reach for the right tool at the specific moment you need it.
The work space you create should spark your creativity and make you happy to be there. Put things in sight that inspire you. Even a very small space can be turned into one of your absolute favorite spots in the whole house and can act as encouragement to keep you rolling out unique projects. There’s no need to monopolize the family’s dinner table when you have your own space in which to work.
