Five Kitchen Ideas to Spark Your Inspiration
October 1, 2010 // 0 CommentsThe kitchen is the room where everyone seems to congregate during family gatherings. Be proud to show off your kitchen by sprucing it up with these inexpensive and easy kitchen ideas.
Bring in some nature:
Give your kitchen a natural, refreshing feel by adding a little plant-life. If you are lucky enough to have space between the top of your cabinets and your ceiling, this is the best place to add some vegetation. Place bromeliads, English ivy plants, or spider plants above cabinets to bring the outdoors in. They all require very low light and infrequent watering.
If your cabinets go all the way to the ceiling, try a narrow rectangular planter filled will herbs. Place it on your kitchen window ledge. It will look pretty, smell wonderful, and produce yummy seasonings to use in your cooking.
Update your hardware:
Changing the hardware on your kitchen cabinets and drawers can provide an instant facelift for the room. Any home improvement store will have a good variety of hardware to choose from.
Remove an old piece of hardware and measure the distance between screw holes in the cabinet if there is more than one. Most hardware which requires two screws to install will have a universal 3 inch spacing. To be on the safe side, make sure you can get the right size replacement hardware before removing all of the old pieces.
Put up a chair rail:
Installing a chair rail will give a glamorous look to your eat-in kitchen area. Not only do chair rails look nice, they are also purposeful.
First, measure and mark around 32-36 inches up from the floor. Using a level, pencil your line around the perimeter of where your chair rail will be.
You can purchase your chair rail molding at any home improvement store. They come in various styles and widths, and usually in 8-12 foot sections.
Cut the molding to the desired, measured lengths with a miter saw. Make 90 degree angled cuts for molding that is butted up to a window or door frame and 45 degree angled cuts for edges that will butt-up to a corner.
Start installing the molding at an inside corner. Match up the bottom of the molding with the level line you already marked. First use wood glue, then further secure with a nail gun and 2 1/2 inch finishing nails.
Recess the nail heads. Use wood putty to fill all holes and any gaps at joints. Sand the puttied areas lightly when the putty has dried. Use paintable caulk to seal the top and bottom where the molding meets the wall. Just a thin beaded line is sufficient.
When the caulk is dry you are ready to paint your new chair rail. Pick any color you like, white shades are most common. Glossier paint will be easier to clean up than flat paint.
